New to Hair Color?

Are you thinking about coloring your hair for the first time? Or, maybe you’re ready for a change?

Here at the Leading Edge hair salon in Santa Rosa, Ca we know that any decision about your hair color can be both exciting AND nerve-wrecking, especially if you’re visiting a new salon for the first time. Why? Because there are so many options and you want to make sure that you get the best results. Where do you start in order to end up with the look you want?

The key to success is a thorough consultation with your colorist. It might seem silly but talking about things like, your lifestyle (occupation, kids or no kids, homebody or frequent traveler, “back to nature” type or “celebrity wanna be” …), along with a frank discussion about how much time, maintenance, and monetary investment will be required is essential!

Our goal is to make your hair color visit the most relaxing, satisfying, and successful experience as possible. We’ve created this page to help answer some of our most frequently asked questions…

Demi-permanent color contains no ammonia, only a small percentage of peroxide and can only darken hair. Over time, the color fades to a translucent stain, but the roots need to be maintained to avoid a mismatched look. Demi-permanent color is the least-damaging hair color process.

Permanent hair color, which can consists of both peroxide and ammonia, can make hair darker or a few shades lighter, and provides excellent coverage for gray. The color lasts until hair grows out, and roots need to be touched up every 3 to 6 weeks.
This process involves placing semi-permanent color on the hair for a short period of time to darken hair slightly or to change its tonality (for example, changing an ash blonde to golden brown). Clear glossing is also available to add shine to hair without altering the color. Glossing needs to be reapplied every few weeks.

Highlights, which involve the use of bleach or permanent color to lighten hair, are great for blending grays. The roots need to be touched up every 6 to 8 weeks.
Permanent or demi-permanent color is used to darken sections of over-lightened hair. Lowlights can also be used to blend grays. Roots should be touched up on an as-needed basis.
A Clay lightener (powdered bleach) is hand-painted onto select pieces of hair to emphasize the lines and layers of a hairstyle. The color will grow out, and roots aren’t noticeable because the color isn’t applied as close to the roots as it is with other color processes.
Color-enhancing shampoos and conditioners are an effective way to preserve your hair color but as color begins to fade, it’s too late to return it to its original shade, therefore we recommend additional at-home haircare maintenance from the start. Salt water, chlorine, heat styling and the sun will all effect your hair color and your haircare home maintenance should reflect these concerns. Also, washing your hair less frequently will help prolong the brilliance of your freshly-colored hair.
